The Enterprise Finds Her Voice

Any Star Trek fan worth their weight in Tribbles knows that Majel Barrett-Roddenberry has played the voice of the Enterprise’s computer in no less than four Trek TV series and three films. Now Variety is reporting that the widow of Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry, will once again return to lend her vocal talents to the universe of Kirk and Spock.

Barrett-Roddenberry will play the voice of the computer aboard the Starship Enterprise in J.J. Abram’s big screen adaptation of Star Trek next spring. I think I speak for Trek fans everywhere when I say “Bravo, J.J.!” Bringing Barrett’s performance from classic Trek to the cinematic reboot of the franchise is a wonderful way to pay tribute to those that went before as well as give fans a hook into familiar Trek territory. This is yet another reason to look forward to this unstoppable blockbuster of a film. Warp speed ahead!

UPDATE: Sad news came this week that Barrett-Roddenberry has passed away at the age of 76. It is unclear if she had already recorded her dialog for the new movie or not yet, but I’m willing to bet the picture will be dedicated to her when it’s released. Majel will be sorely missed by Star Trek fans everywhere. If there is consolation in her passing, it’s that she is at last reunited with her husband. Goodbye Majel, we loved you!
