C’mon guys, in the intro you talk about the transporter, and of course it has already been invented, years ago. But no way would it ever be released, that’s one of those techs that can never be released while we have a monetary lifestyle.
Consider the implications to trade, half of the travel industry would shut down, trucking and haulage of goods would be gone, no more transport services. That all means a LOT of people out of work.
Too many possibilities for people to “go missing” every mob hit would be a clean hit cause the would just transport you to nowhere.
And then the basic principle of pattern matching means the end of world hunger as with transporting we’d be able to use practically any objects at its base carbon atom level to produce any other item through transportation and replication. There goes food service industry but also world hunger. Population boom and a lot fewer jobs to go around.
And yes, I’ve thought about this way too much
OK so heads up, I just started listing to your podcast and have to tell you I have this annoying habit of either writing a single long comment as I listen to a podcast, or a series of comments. I don’t do this for most podcast, just the ones I really like
With regard to Voyager, wow, I didn’t know there were Trek Folk who didn’t like it. If I were to ask amongst my friends (and I have in the past), I’m pretty sure most would say Voyager was their favourite Trek series.
Having not just a female captain, a first, but such a strong character in the captain. Her no bullish*t attitude was awesome, her maintaining her distance from the crew in the early days. And even the couple of times she argued with her time-shifted/parallel universe self were brilliant. Sure more folks came on board when sassy/sexy 7 of 9 became Janeway’s foil, which Chakotay never seemed to be. And that was 7′s purpose, not just as another ‘growing’ character.
DS9 is the series I never really got into, tired to, but couldn’t do it with any longevity. And I liked Enterprise even though I didn’t love Scott Bakula. Interesting note that only TNG and Voyager got Prime Time launches here in Australia, but as with all Trek in Australia got pushed to odd hours on odd days and was too regularly bumped for Cricket or some other crap sport.
And yes, Star Trek is by far my favourite franchise ever.
