Earlier today, geeks everywhere were shocked to learn of Disney’s acquisition of Marvel. According the the press release, “[The] acquisition highlights Disney’s strategic focus on quality branded content, technological innovation and international expansion to build long-term shareholder value.” In other words, HOLY CRAP MICKEY MOUSE PWNS SPIDER MAN.

So what does this mean for both companies, and for the fans? We took a look around, and here’s what we found.

Theme Parks

For years, Universal Studio’s parks have featured many of the Marvel characters. Specifically, there’s an Incredible Hulk roller coaster, a Spider Man immersive experience and walk-around characters like Wolverine and Captain America. There’s also a Universal Studios park right next to Disney World in Orlando. Will this deal change things? According to The LA Times, the answer is “No.”

‘“Our agreement with Marvel stands for as long as we follow the terms of our existing contract and for as long as we want there to be a Marvel Super Hero Island,’ said Universal Studios Florida spokesman Tom Schroder.”

Additionally, Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said his company will honor the current relationship between Marvel and Universal, though Disney will “…use Marvel where we can on Disney platforms and in Disney places.”

In short: Marvel stays at Universal, will probably crop up at Disney, too.

Toys & Merchandise

Hasbro has been making the Marvel toys and, according to Reuters, they could be in trouble. Even though they’re contracted with Marvel through 2017, what happens then is up for grabs. After all, Disney has a longer-standing relationship with Mattel. From Reuters:

“…But the biggest lost opportunity may be on TV — analysts had expected Marvel’s relationship with Hasbro to extend onto screens.

In April, Hasbro signed a deal with Discovery to develop a kids’ TV network. Analysts say the Spidey-Mickey deal leaves the No. 2 U.S. toymaker in a spot.

‘We view this as a lost opportunity for 3rd party content as we had thought it was probable that Marvel-related TV content over time would gravitate toward the Hasbro/Discovery joint venture given Hasbro’s long-term licensing agreement with Marvel,’ Wells Fargo Securities analyst Tim Conder said in a research note.”

In short: Expect things to remain the same until 2017, and huge changes after that.

What does Stan Lee think?

Lest we forget Spidey’s father? What does Stan think of the whole thing? Here’s the answer, true believers, according to The New York Times:

“I couldn’t be happier with this agreement. It’s great move for Disney, for Marvel and for my company Pow! Entertainment since Pow! has a first look deal with Disney. From every possible point of view, the merger of Disney and Marvel is a match made in heaven. Just imagine, with this deal Marvel gives Disney a library of literally hundreds of unique and colorful characters that have the potential to make great, high-concept movies and long-lasting franchises — and nobody knows how to play in that ball park better than Disney. This is a great day for the two companies and for the entertainment community as a whole. To sum it up as simply as possible, when you combine the best with the best, everyone wins!”

In short: Stan’s happy. And that’s a good thing.

When The Clone Wars movie hit theaters, I avoided it. In fact, I still haven’t seen it. Likewise, I avoided the TV series. Then I heard some buzz about the show and finally gave in. A year later, I’m glad I did.

The first episode, Ambush, was great. In fact, it featured a side of Yoda that’s been absent for way too long. Instead of the backwards-talking (It wasn’t every single sentence back in the old movies), military leader, here was the reassuring Yoda. It was good to have him back.

The middle of season 1 started to sag, but by the end it was quite good indeed. A number of vicious bounty hunters appeared and brought some palpable tension to what’s certainly a show for kids.

Season 1 ended with a cliffhanger and season 2 picks right up where the action left off. Above is the teaser. Go ahead and tell us you don’t want to see it. We dare you.

There are few couples in all of science fiction more deliciously wonderful than Zapp “The Zapper” Brannigan and his hapless, defeated assistant, Kif. Originally intended to be voiced by Phil Hartman, Zapp was portrayed by Billy West and was based upon Shatner’s Captain Kirk. Even when he’s stripped of his rank after destroying the Democratic Order of Planets (D.O.O.P.), Zapp lands back on his two feet. Largely because of Kif.

Ah, Kif. Zapp’s assistant and Amy’s boyfriend, Kif is smart enough to recognize when Zapp’s about to get into trouble, but too timid to do anything about it. Some of our favorite Kif moments are his exasperated sighs. For example:

Leela: You know, Zapp, someone ought to teach you a lesson.
Zapp: If it’s a lesson in love, watch out; I suffer from a very sexy learning disability. What do I call it, Kif?
Kif: [sighs] “Sex-lexia”

If Kif and Zapp ever starred in a buddy road trip movie, we’d be first in line to see it. Here’s to Kif and the Zapper, one of our favorite sci-fi duos.

Eastwick

Based upon The Witches of Eastwick with Cher, Jack Nicholson and Susan Sarandon, the series stars Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price and Paul Gross. The trailer makes it look like Charmed meets Desperate Housewives, so if you like the idea of magic-wielding cougars, tune in. Have we mentioned Rebecca Romijn? “Charmed” indeed. ABC’s Eastwick will premiere on September 23rd at 10 PM.

FlashForward

FlashForward is based on the Prix Aurora Award-winning novel of the same name by Robert J. Sawyer. It stars Joseph Fiennes and John Cho. The premise is interesting: For some unknown reason, everyone receives a glimpse of their lives 6 months into the future. It only lasts for two minutes and seventeen seconds, but no one misses it. Some even witness their own death. The FBI sends detective Mark Benford (played by Fiennes) to investigate. ABC’s FlashForward premieres on September 24th at 8 PM.

Dollhouse

Joss Wheadon’s nearly-canceled Dollhouse resumes a well-deserved second season in September. For the uninitiated, Dollhouse tracks the lives of impressionable agents who are fitted with a personality and skill set in order to complete a task, only to have all memory of the event erased as soon as the objective is achieved.

The show really grew on us last year and we’re looking forward to the next chapter. Fox’s Dollhouse premieres on September 25th at 9 PM.

Others with fall premiere dates include The Ghost Whisperer (Sept. 25 on CBS at 8 PM), Smallville (Sept. 25 on CW at 8 PM), Fringe (Sept. 17 on FOX at 9 PM), Supernatural (Sept. 10 on the CW at 9 PM) and Vampire Diaries (Sept. 10 on CW at 8 PM).

If you were expecting news on V, The Plan or Caprica, we’re sorry to disappoint you. The Plan is tentatively scheduled to air in November of this year, while the others won’t hit the airwaves until 2010.

Earlier this week, AMC announced that they’ve gotten the rights to turn Robert Kirkman’s comic serial The Walking Dead into a series. As a devoted Walking Dead fan I’m both elated and horrified by this news.

First, the good. Krikman’s ongoing story (more on that later) is tremendous. Zombie horror is nothing new, but Walking Dead’s approach is fresh. It follows a group of unlikely survivors in a zombie-riddled world as they fight — the undead and each other — to survive. The typical ingredients like bloodthirsty undead, violent battles and a sinking distrust are in place, but Kirkman doesn’t rest on the tried-and-true zombie formula. I won’t give anything away, but the “how” and “why” aren’t what you’d expect.

Now for my trepidation. Krikman’s motivation in writing The Walking Dead is to have a zombie story that doesn’t end. In the epilogue to the first book, he explains that the one thing he’s hated about every zombie move he’s seen is the end. His story is far-reaching and slower moving than we typically see on TV. Plus, by the end of the first volume of books a large number of characters have been introduced. Characters who don’t go away very quickly. The storytelling develops slowly and naturally, and the character’s emotions are real.

So what can we expect from AMC? It’s still an unknown quantity. AMC has produced two fantastic shows as of late, Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Additionally, Frank Darabont is on board to write and direct. Frank is a three-time Oscar nominee and director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. What all this means is that the show is (probably) in good hands.

As I said, I’m both excited and anxious about this show. Here’s hoping it’s fantastic. The story deserves it. In the meantime, enjoy the fan film above.

Earlier this week, Craig Engler, who runs the SyFy Network’s Twitter stream, posted a couple of teasers about Caprica, the forthcoming BSG sequel. He revealed that a rough cut of the 1st episode is being shown around the network. Additionally, he was enthusiastic about a conference call with producer Jane Espenson (@capricaseven on Twitter).

Other rumors are appearing as the show’s January 22nd premiere approaches. According to Sci Fi Wire (an official blog of SyFy), Patton Oswalt will play the host of a late-night comedy show across “…several episodes.” I’m nervous about the selection. Not because Patton isn’t funny, he is. I’m thinking of John Hodgeman’s jarring appearance on BSG.

Additionally, Entertainment Weekly reports that Buffy alumnus James Marsters will join the cast for what they’re calling “… a sizable arc” as the terrorist leader Barnabus Greeley.

Fans of Battlestar Galactica have another chance to own a small slice of the show thanks to a new series of eBay auctions. Propworx, an official auctioneer of Battlestar Galactica props & costumes has some tantalizing items up for sale. Some of the cool props that caught our eye were the BSG Pyramid Ball, the trademark Battlestar tank top and undershirt worn by the Colonial military and a cool set of BSG colored binders, complete with cut corners.

These items would make perfect additions to any BSG fan’s collections, but they do come with a price. The binders alone are currently selling for over $400 and who knows how high they’ll go before the auction is completed. If you’re looking to pick up any of these awesome items from BSG, you better act quick. Many of these auctions end later today so you don’t have time to waste. Have fun!

Anyone who’s listened to our weekly games of “Truth or Sci-Fi” (see eps 30 & 31) knows that network executives will put almost anything on the tube, regardless of quality. So it escapes us why The SciFi Channel insists on producing made for TV drek like Sharks in Venice when there are perfectly good properties just waiting to be re-imagined for the small screen.

According to the efforts of science fiction illustrator Doug Drexler, Buckaroo Banzai would seem to be just such a property. Over at his awesome blog, Drex Files, Doug gives readers a small glimpse into some of what a new Buckaroo Banzai TV series might look like. Production designer Mike Okuda (of Star Trek the Next Generation fame) approached Doug and several other talented artists to ask if they would volunteer their time to illustrate key elements of the Buckaroo universe. This artwork would then be used by Buckaroo’s original director, W.D. Richter, to pitch the idea of Banzai’s return to network executives.

Some of the artwork created includes a detailed schematic of ‘Banzai West‘, a sprawling underground complex from which Team Banzai heads their west coast operations, and concept sketches for new diabolical gear used by Emilio Lizardo. You know these guys are serious Buckaroo addicts since they donated so much of their time and talent to get Buckaroo going again. Speaking as one of Team Banzai’s biggest fans, I really hope someone at the SciFi Channel does something right for a change and green lights this project. The world could use Buckaroo Banzai again, especially now.

Exciting news for fans of the classic BBC scifi series Doctor Who this week. Doctor Who Magazine is reporting that the third season (or ’series’ as they are called in the UK) of the Sarah Jane Adventures will feature a two-part episode with starring David Tennant as the Doctor himself. Fans will remember that the Doctor and Sarah Jane parted ways at the end of School Reunion in a bittersweet goodbye that set the stage for Elizabeth Sladen’s return to regular television with her new kids series.

While The SciFi Channel picked up the first season of Sarah Jane, U.S. audiences have so far missed out on season 2 so there’s no telling if we’ll ever get to see Tennant and Sladen together again here in the U.S., at least through official channels. Hopefully BBC America will pick up where the SciFi Channel left off and air this new, exciting adventure from producer Russell T. Davies and writer Gareth Roberts. Now that Battlestar Galactica has ended and Caprica* has jumped far away, SciFi Network executives hope Warehouse 13 will fill the void. It’s set to premiere on July 7, which is just about a month away. This post will let you know what to expect from the network’s would-be flagship show.

Premise

Think The X-Files: Storage Division. Secret Service agents Myka and Peter are sent to the US government’s super-secret Warehouse 13, right in the middle of nowhere, North Dakota. It’s so secret, in fact, that our heroes — fresh from an assignment with the President of the United States — are unaware of it.

The warehouse holds all of the top-secret items the government has collected since its inception. The problem: Something has gone missing, and Myka and Peter must find it. Additionally, they’re asked to keep an eye out for anything else that deserves a slot on the shelves.

It’ll be a comedy with some drama and lots of gee-wiz special effects.

Cast and crew

Eddie McClintock plays renegade agent Peter. He’s appeared in a great numer of TV shows over the years, but does he have any sci-fi cred? Unfortunatley, the answer is “No.” Eddie has been on big shows like Friends, Bones, Desperate Housewives (though, how Marcia Cross still looks good after all these years is a bit of a science fiction mystery) and House, but nothing in the genre.

The lovely and talented Joanne Kelly plays agent Myka, the show’s “by-the-book” character. Unlike Eddie, Joanne has got decent nice sci-fi cred. She appeared in an episode of Supernatural,  three episodes of the short-lived Dresden Files and 2005’s Solar Strike.

A male loose cannon FBI agent paired with a rules-bound female agent to investigate the government’s involvement with the supernatural … sound familiar, anyone?

Behind the scenes it’s even better. The 2-hour pilot was written by Farscape creator Rockne S. O’Bannon, Battlestar Galactica co-exec producer Jane Espenson and D. Brent Mote.

Twelves episodes have been shot, including the pilot.

Getting our hopes up

We want this show to be good. There’s a lot of potential: The stuff inside the warehouse is limited to the writers’ imaginations, and we like dramas with a little comedy on the side. Keep your fingers crossed.

Episode 32

This time around, Scott McNulty joined us to talk about the new Caprica movie. The consensus: It’s very good, but waiting a year for the next episode is not.

And we thought they looked cute on the outside! This super-cool plushie Tauntaun with removable frozen Luke Skywalker is the handiwork of sewing artist Heidi Kenney and is due to be shown as part of the upcoming Stitch Wars exhibit from July 18th – August 29th. The exhibit is being held in Florida, but Star Wars fans can view and purchase goods from the show online at stitchwars.com (the site isn’t up yet but you can view info for it here). The LA Times is reporting today that the SciFi Network will be releasing complete video of BSG’s visit to the UN. Until now, only brief clips have appeared on YouTube, including Edward James Olomos’ awesome “One Race” speech. If you’re unfamiliar, Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Ronald D. Moore and David Eick were invited to speak to the UN about the show’s impact on issues of humanity in contemporary society. The event was moderated by Guinan Whoopi Goldberg, and very well received. Plus, how cool do they look behind placards that read “Caprica”?

I honestly can’t remember a time when I couldn’t walk into a bookstore and purchase Starlog Magazine. Started back in 1976 before the advent of the internet, Starlog was the single best source for news and inside information about science fiction and fantasy films you could buy. Packed full of color photos, on the set reporting and cool ads for nerdy, sci-fi related merchandise, Starlog often found its way into my bookbag.

News comes this week that Starlog Magazine is folding up shop and moving 100% to the web which will allow them to stay alive in the form of a web portal. I’m actually stunned this didn’t happen sooner given the decline in magazine sales in the U.S. in recent years. No matter what Starlog’s ultimate fate may yet be, I’ll always be grateful for the piles of stories about Star Trek, Star Wars, James Bond and others that Starlog gave to its fans to absorb like geeky sponges. Farewell Starlog, you’ll be missed!

Variety is reporting that Harlan Ellison, the writer who penned the teleplay behind one of Star Trek’s all-time classic episodes has filed suit with CBS to recoup royalties he says the media giant owes him. Ellison alleges that Paramount and it’s parent company, Viacom owe him money for the merchandising, publishing and other exploitations of “City on the Edge of Forever“.

Since I’m not familiar with the legal arrangement Desliu Studios originally set up with the author, it’s difficult to say if Ellison has a case, but it does seem that 30 years is a long time to wait to set your phasers on “sue”. It would be easy to assume that Ellison just wants a slice of the huge Star Trek merchandising pie that is has been building for the past few months in preparation for the new movie. It’s also true that Harlan has never been happy with how his script was treated by Roddenberry when it was adapted for the screen. All this aside, we’ll have to let the wheels of justice turn before a verdict is rendered. I just hope that when all is said and done, Gene’s not spinning in his sub-orbital grave.

Morons. Moronic fraking morons. So moronic I should have guessed Bonnie Hammer is behind it. And they are going to change the nature of some of the programming.

“We couldn’t own Sci Fi; it’s a genre,” said Bonnie Hammer, the former president of Sci Fi who became the president of NBC Universal Cable Entertainment and Universal Cable Productions. “But we can own Syfy.”

The entire thing reads like a stupid marketing joke. I better stop here before Dave figures out how to bleep blog posts.

If you’ve dreamt of owning an official prop from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that’s also a cuddly, adorable plaything then you’re in luck. The website TrekCore and photographer Michael Grecco are auctioning off several cool DS9 related items including 6 prop Tribbles from the classic season 6 episode – Trials and Tribble-ations. There’s also some never before seen publicity photos that would make any Trek collector drool. Check out all the items over at TrekCore or head straight to eBay to bid on the little guys through March 20th. Personally, we think the striped one is to die for.

Some television shows die slow and painful deaths as they linger far past their creative high point. Shows like Twin Peaks, Xena: Warrior Princess and The X-Files petered out over time until they were mere shells of their former selves. Then there are shows that, either by their own hand or by external forces, go out on a high note. Shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Futurama and Farscape all ended while fan interest was high and characters had room to grow. For me, Battlestar Galactica is somewhere in between.

While I throughly enjoy watching Galactica each week, there is a big part of me that wants the show to end. With the ever-increasing delays between seasons, and the unresolved nature of some of the basic plot lines (Baltar, Kara, Earth), I think I’m finally ready to bid this rag-tag fleet goodbye. Don’t misunderstand me on this point. When the series finale airs on Friday, March 20th one of the finest dramas on television will go off the air. But I’d much rather have Adama, Six, Kara and the rest of these wonderful characters go out in a blaze of glory than spend the next 2-3 years limping along like President Roslin on Kamala.

From the moment it was announced, Battlestar Galactica burst onto scene with a hail of controversy thanks to Ron Moore’s “re-imagining” of the series. Fans and network execs didn’t like the idea of cylons looking like humans, or Dirk Benedict’s cigar-smoking, chauvinistic character Starbuck, being played by a woman. It’s amazing how petty those arguments seem now. Put simply, Moore took the best aspects of the original Galactica and jettisoned the junk. The result was a gritty, dark and often realistic look at how human beings react when under enormous stress. Moore gave us a universe filled with deception, sex, cool swear words and mythos that will be looked to as the science fiction TV water mark for years.

I don’t know how the show will end, but I do know that no matter what happens, Battlestar Galactica has been that rare gem in the vast wasteland that is episodic television. From week to week, each episode felt like cinema instead of boob tube. Incredible writing combined with imaginative and detailed art direction, fine actors, compelling music and convincing SFX to keep us tuning in and on our toes. In the end, what more could anyone ask from a TV show?

How geeky are you?

I’m only about level 3 from the top, but I have 3 spots there too. (And, no, I’m not telling you which ones.)

Last Friday was the premiere of Fox’s Dollhouse, the new Joss Whedon project. It was … OK. I’m afraid that the show’s science fiction aspects will only be used to set up run-of-the-mill “Good guy vs. bad guy” plots. Don’t take my word for it. The ratings were dismal.

Brazilian diamond heisters? Quick, imprint the hottest barely-legal agent with the mind of a tough-as-nails, loose canon beat cop on the edge of the law!

I’m going to give it another chance (rumor has it the show picks up with episode 5), but for now I’ve got my phaser set to “skeptical.”

Ged here with some quick thoughts on the Dollhouse premiere. Overall I did enjoy the series opener, but that’s not to say I wasn’t disappointed in it. Quite frankly I expected more from Joss especially since the pilot has been re-worked at least once. Someone on Twitter said that pilots need to hook you big time (like “33″ did with BSG), and Dollhouse just didn’t do that. Part of the problem are the unoriginal elements of the show which seem to be taken from all over. I can see aspects of Ghost In the Shell, Alias, Total Recall and more in Joss’ Dollhouse which doesn’t bode well for him creatively. I’m willing to watch a couple more episodes, but unless it picks up quickly I fear there won’t be more to watch. Of course, I’ve talked about this vicious cycle before, and I’ll probably talk about it again. At any rate, time to step things up Joss, the clock is ticking.
